LATEST ENGLISH NEWS.
[From Supplement to Sydney Morning Herald, Oct. 90.] The arrival of the Hamlet this morning, after a quick passage of one hundred, and fir* days, has put us in possession of English newt to the 16th July inclusive. The wool sales had concluded. As they advanced the prices rallied about a penny a pound, and we gather from the papers that after the sales had taken place prices rather improved. Trade was improving, there being almost a certainty of a good harvest. Consols were at 88|. The Bill for granting an additional loan of £126,000 to the New Zealand Company had passed the House of Commons. We see no mention of emigration the papers before us. After the dissolution Sir W. Somervill* was to be appoin'ed Irish Secretary, and Mr. Labouchere President of the Board of Control. The following notice, which is considered of some importance T>y parties connected With the Austratian colonies, has just been issued from the General Post Office, on the subject of the conveyance of letters, &c. :— '* " General Post Office, July, 1847. "It having been represented to the Post-master-General that the opportunities of forwarding letters from this country direct to Port Adelaide, Sooth Australia, and to Port Phillip, New South Wales, by private ship are now frequent, and that the correspondence for tho>e districts will be more expeditiously conveyed by such vessels than by the monthly contract packets to Sydney, by which it is at present transacted, all letters and newspapers for South Australia and Port Phillip will hereafter be forwarded by private ship sailing to those places, unless specially addressed to go by the Sydney packets. " The postage chargeable upon such correspondence will consequently be the usual ship letter rate of 8d for each letter not exceeding half an ounce in weight, &c, and Id for each newspaper, unless such letters or newspapers are specially addressed to be forwarded by packet, when the packet rate of postage will be chargeable upon letters, and newspapers will be forwarded free. ' " Letters and newspapers for New Zealand will stijl be forwarded by the Sydney contract packets, unless specially addressed by private ship."
