TARANAKL

[From our Correspondent.] Taranaki, Oct. 11, 1847. The 12,000 acre block of land South of the Sugar Loaves was sold by the Taranaki natives early last month. According to custom (not very pernicious to us in this instance) the natives will take their own time for giving up their favourite spots. Then it must be surveyed, offered by the Government to the Company, and if accepted, by the latter to the settlers. On Saturday last (Oct. 9,) a balance of £50 on Captain Fitzroy's purchase three years since of 3800 acres was paid up to the owners, who, from the delays, must have formed a high opinion of his promises. This payment, it is considered, has removed a difficulty in the securing of the land behind the town, promised by the owners to Captain Grey in March last, but which with some exceptions is worth little from the density of the timber. The land-order holders moreover, if they ever cultivate in the new block, must abandon their ] choices in the district taken from them by Captain Fitzroy ; yet there is so little reason to look forward to occupy the forbidden .land within reasonable time that, objectionable as the new block is in many respects, re-selec-

tions will be made in it this month. A Public Meeting was held on the 7th at which it was agreed to call Captain Grey's attention to the condition of this settlement since his visit in March last.
