TT having been brought under the notice -*■ of the Lieutenant GovEKNOßthat many persons have recently made and are still making illegal arrangements with the Native Race, for the renting, use, or occupation, of lands in various directions, by which innumerable difficulties are likely to be thrown in tte way of amicably adjusting any questions connected with Land, and the general tranquillity of the Colony is liable to be seriously endangered : His Excellency has been pleased to direct it to be notified for general information, that unless all persons so offending do at once forbear from such arrangements, they will be proceeded against under the Native Land Purchase Ordinance, Session 7., No. 19,, of which His Excellency has directed the republication of the following extract ; — Clause I. — " If any person shall, after the passing of this Ordinance, purchase, or by writing or otherwise agree to purchase any Estate or Interest in Land from any person of the Native Race, or shall by writing or otherwise agree with an}' such person for the purchase of the right of cutting Timber or other Trees, or of the right of Mining, or of the right of Pasturage, or for the use or occupation of Land : "And also, if any person who shall not hold a License from the Government for that purpose 'shall, after the passing of this Ordinance, be found using or occupying any Land not composed within a Grant from the Crown, either by depasturing any sheep or cattle thereon, or by residing thereon, or by erecting any house or building thereon, or by clearing, enclosing, or cultivating any part thereof, or who shall be found without such License aforesaid to have cut Timber or other Trees thereon, or to have gotten any Mineral therefrom : " Every such person shall, upon conviction of any of the Offences hereinbefore mentioned, forfeit and pay any Sum not less than Five Pounds, nor more than One Hundred Pounds, to be recovered in a summary way : " Provided that no person shall be convicted of any of the offences aforesaid, except on the Information or Complaint of the Surveyor General, or of some other Officer duly authorised in that behalf by His Excellency the Governor." Secretary's Office, Wellington, 9th October, 1847. rpENDERS will be received at this Office ■*• on or before Saturday, the 16th inst., from persons desirous of contracting for the undermentioned Services, vizt. : — For Cartage on the New Road in the Upper Hutt District, at per diem, for Horse, Cart, and Driver. For Metalling, at per chain, that portion of the Hutt Road between the Waiwetu River and where the present Metalling finishes near the Second River. The Metal to be 10 feet in width, with a depth of 4 inches, and laid on according to specification. Further information may be obtained at the Survey Office, Wellington. Tenders ty be in duplicate, sealed and endorsed '• Tenders fpf Services on Hutt $oad." By Hi» Excellency's Command, S. E. GRIMSTONE, Acting Secretary.
