From Lieut.-Governor Grey To the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone. Wellington, July 29, 1846.
Sir, —lntelligence has just reached me that Rangibaeata, alarmed at the movements which are now going on, has moved from his pa at
Prfhbatanui, accompanied by a considerable number of bis followers. Some of the rebels are supposed still to occupy the pa, but I have failed in obtaining any information as to the direction in which the main body have gone. This movement, upon the part of Rangihaeata will necessarily occasion corresponding modifications in the plan of operations which I had laid down. lam apprehensive that the rebels may again have relumed to the hills above the valley of the Hutt. I have therefore just issued orders for the movement of a body of militia and police, accompanied by 240 of the Port Nicholson natives from the Hutt, upon pa Pauhatanui, by a mountain pathway which Rangihaeata believes to be impracticable for any European force. If the rebels have again ventured in this direction, they will once more be driven back on their pa by this movement; and I intend to request Captain Stanley of the Calliope to take round to Porirua a body of troops under Major Last of the 99th regiment, in order that a combined naval and military force may meet Rangihaeata as he is retreating, if he should be fallen in with by the militia. I feel satisfied that so sudden and unexpected a movement must result in our surprising some of the rebels. — I hare, &c. (Signed) G. Grey. The Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, &c.
