SYDNEY.
Mr. Eyre, the well known Australian traveller, arrived yesterday on his way to New Zealand, of which colony he has, as previously announced, been appointed Lieutenant-Go-vernor. We understand it has been determined that fo. the present the military force in New Zealand is to consist of two thousand five hundred men — i. c. y two regiments of one thousand each, and the New Zealand veteran battalion, five hundred strong. The naval force is also to be considerably increased, two Hoe-
of-battle-ships being ordered for the station. One of them, the Malabar 78, was to sail in March, having the first division of the veteran battalion on board, and by this vessel MajorGeneral Pitt would take his passage. The name of the second ship we have not heard. It will be seen by this that the Ministry are determined to spare no expense to push the pet colony a-head. — Sydney Morning Herald.
Among the deaths are those of the Duke of Northumberland, and George Robins, the celebrated auctioneer.
New Bishopricks. — The Bishops at their recent meeting accepted Lord John Russell's proposal to have four new Bishopricks created without seats in Parliament, but to succeed to seats as vacancies occur, and the four junior Bishops to be always without seats. The Bishops accepted this in preference to a new Bishop of Manchester with a seat. It is said that the four Bishopricks will be conferred on the Hon. and Rev. Montague Villiers, M.A., Rectcr of St. George's, Bloomsbury, the Rev. Thomas Dale, M.A., Vicar of St. Pancras, the Rev. J. Slade, M.A., Vicar of Bolton-le-Moors, and the Rev. B. P. Symons, D.D. Warden of Wadham College, Oxford, and Vice Chancellor of the University.
