VAN DIEMEN'S LAND. [From the Australian.]

Our papers from the sistAT colony reach to the 7th instant. The Advertiser states, that " rumours are rife that there are to be extensive reductions, and that many offices are to be abolished, and the holders thereof are to be dismissed. There is no doubt that alterations must take place — that the expenditure must be equalized to the public income — but beyond this all the reports current are conjecture. Nothing has officially uanspired beyond the verbal communication that his Excellency honoreJ Messrs. Swanston and Gregson with, some weeks since ; but the minds of the various official occuptnts may be rendered somewhat tranquil, when they reflect that the head of the present Government is a just man — if he finds it necessary for the public sei vice that any office is to be abolished, he will, render strict justice to those who have proved themselves efficient servaats. But at the same time, those incompetent will, no doubt, be displaced to give way to ' abler and better men.' We believe on the latter point Sir William Denison has expressed himt-elt m.ich more emphatically than we have written. " Sir Wiiliam Denison, like our sporting Governor, Sir Charles, had patronized the Tuif in the sister colony, and had forwarded £5 towards the Annual Races. It was hinted that the Colonial Secretary, for consistency's sake, would in all probability resign office. „ ■%>.
