CHINA.

We received Hongkong Registers by the Linnet, to the sth January inclusive. The Register of the sth instant, states that " H.M. Ships Iris and W>>lf, sailed on Tuesday last for the Isle of Labuan, pursuant to instructions brought from Sir T. J. Cochrane by the latter vessel, to take possession of that island for the English Crown. The instructions from the home Government, we understand, are to the effect that although settlers are not to be invited to report to Lubuan, yet they are not to be forbidden, which is m effect a tacit consent to the resort thither of traders. We msy therefoie shortly expect to see numbers going from this to Labuan for the purposes of trade ; indeed, one vessel, fitted out by Chinese merchants, has already saile . for that place."
