PORT PHILLIP.

A serious fire occurred by which the premises of Messrs. Liddy and Passfield, coach builders, were totally destroyed. A seven horse power steam mill is in course of erection by Lauglands & Co. In consequence of the murder of a man attached to the party of Mr. Surveyor Smythe, by the blacks at Cape Otway, Mr. Smythe obtained authority to provide arms, ammunition, and stores, for the organization of the Barrabool tribe, with ten of whom Mr. Smythe departed for Cape Otway. The result of the expedition was the utter extermination, with one exception, of the Otway tribe— men, women, and children. An enquiry into this affair was expected to take place. Mr. Howard, of the Gazette printing establishment, know at Hobart Town as the interpreter to the boy Keo, has commenced manufacturing founts of "Jobbing Type" from colonial material. From specimens that have been produced, there was reason to think that ihe necessity of sending to England for type of this description would soon be superseded. St. Helena. — His Excellency Colonel Hamelin Trelawny died at St. Helena on the 3d May, of an attack of paralysis, in his 64th year. He is succeeded by Lieutenant Colonel Frazer, It. A. Colonel Trelawny is sincerely regretted by the inhabitants of St. Helena. The St. Helena Regiment was under orders for the Cape. This is a fine body of men, and likely to prove a most efficient addition to the force now on the Frontier. — Commercial Advertiser.
