To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator.

Sir, — Haying recently returned from Wanganui by land I would wish, through the medium of your paper, to state the following facts, to shew the urgent necessity for establishing ferries on the coast : — On my journey from Wellington to Wangamri, at Ohau I had to wait for several hours for the tide ; with a ferry I should have been able to have proceeded ou my journey, and have saved a day. At Manawatu I was charged ten shillings for myself and horse by the natives, and was obliged to submit to their exactions. j At Rangitikei, through the want of a ferry, I was obliged to stay all night on the beach in a ■violent N. W. gale with rain, and of course ■caught a severe cold. ; At Porirua also, if a ferry were established, with a regular scale of charges, it would be a great improvement on the present plan. As soon as the disputes with the natives are settled, if the ferries across the different rivers are placed under proper regulations by the Government, and a low rate of charges established it would be a very great advantage to persons travelling along the coast, and tend materially to promote the intercourse between Wellington and the other settlements, which is becoming of increasing importance. I am your obedient servant, Wellington, Maich 6, 1846.
