Reform Club, August 7. Sir, — As it is understood that negotiations are going on at this time between the New Zealand Company and the Government, with a view to the settlement of the differences between them, I feel justified, by the deep interest I have in the question, and under an obligation to my fellow settlers, to remind the company that we have a just and unanswerable claim to be indemnified in some way for the ruinous consequences of the long delay in thefulfilment of the New Zealand Company's contract with v«. To give us at this late period a bare fulfilment of the original contract, after the lapse of more than six years since you received our purchasemoney, would be of little value to the majority of us. Having been a director of the Union Bank, I know that there is scarcely one of the original land orders that has not been mortgaged at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum ; and that men like myself have made ruinous sacrifices in the hope that ultimately they might redeem their • property. Ido not now presume to say whether 1 the company or the Government is morally responsible for this state of things; but it is clear that the settlers ought to be indemnified, and my sole object now is to prevent that subject from being overlooked in the final settlement of the question. I trust that the part I have taken in the .late controversies will be a sufficient pledge that I make this communication from a sense of duty, and not from any distrust in the honour and generosity of the directors. Begging that you will submit this letter to them, I am, Sir, your obedient servant, GEORGE SAM. EVANS. Mr. T. C. Harrington.
