Henry Baiter being s-vorn, states; lam a butcher, and reside f.t Wellington. This mornins? I'here was a piece of wheat which the maori wished me to go ncr ss ; I refused, telling him that the oHHiei woul 1 be angry with me if I walked a<*ross it. He then It-ft me under pretence of t looking for the pig; he shortly returned and asked mi* to as-i-t bun to catch tiie pig with a dog which I hid wi h me ; I set the dog n seaich of the pig ; shortly afterwards the maoii suddenly caught me by the legs and threw me on mv back; he then attempted to draw his bill -hook out of his b'anke*, but I was up too quickly fori.hnjhe succeeded in striking me on the head with the bil -hook, whi h wounded me severely ; I caught hold of* th » bill-hook and wrested it from him; at this moment I was seized by ihe leg by the dog, and thrown on my knee^; the maori closed with me at this instant, and in the struggle we rolled down the hill into a stream of water; he got th 'bill-hook from me, and struck at me several times; my hand is severely cut and my head cut in several places; I believe the macri would have murdered me had Henry Barling not heard my crieb and come to my assistance ; I do not know the name of the maori, but I should know him again if I were to see him.
