ENGLISH NEWS.
Archdeacon Wilberforce had been appoint' ed to the Deanery of Westminster, vacant by Dr. Turton's being appointed to the episcopal bench. Among distinguished men departed we find the names of the witty Tom Hood, the IJarl of Stamford, Colonel Sir George Ho<te, and Dr. Welsh, the professor of Divinity and Church History in the University of Edinburgh. The will of the Rev. Sydney Smith has been proved, and the personal property swora to be under £80,000. A Committee of the House of Commons has reported favourably " of the general merits of the atmospheric system of railways;" but adds, that "it feels that experience can alone determine under what circumstances of traffic or country the preference to either system should be given." — Atlas. Monmouth-street, named after the unfortunate son of Charles 11., so well known from its being the residence of the purveyors of secondhand habiliments, has had its name changed to Dudley-street. Petticoat-lane, at the East end, has in a similar manner been transferred to the euphonious sound of Middlesex-street. —Ibid.
