To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator. October 17, 1845.
Sir, — Your correspondent X, last week, has not stated as clearly as he might the Maori population in the vicinity of the settlements in Cook's Straits. He allots 22,000 Maories to the country southward of Auckland. It would, in my opinion, be plainer to say that, on the north shore of Cook's Strait, from New Plymouth included, to the East Coast (including the country south of Hawke's Bay), the Maori population is not more than 10,000. Then, again, in the Middle Island, and Stewart's Island, the whole number is 4,700 Maories. I am, Sir, yours, &c, Y.
