A private letter from Auckland states :
" There is a report in town, that when old Clarke went to the Bay of Islands (from which> trip he has just returned), he was commissioned b^ the Governor to try and make peace with Heki ; but Johnny told him that he would not treat with the Governor, as he was only the Queen's tlave, — but that he was content to refer it ro the Queen, as she was a good woman ; and then if Victoria liked to remove all the white people from his part of the Island, he would be quiet, otherwise he Vould continue the war; in the meantime, however, lie told the Governor to be very polite, or he would come down, and burn and destroy Auckland."
