[From the Auckland Times.]
An ancient ballad lately discovered, recounting the magnanimous actions of King Robert, supposed to be ancestor to King Arthur. When great King Robert ruled the land, Strange matters there befell ; If you will lend a willing ear, These matters I will tell. King Robert had a Treasurer, A cunning man waa he, Who had an iron money-box, Of which he kept the key. Of gold and silver bad he none, But what is quite the same, He printed lots of paper notes, On which he wrote his name. One day Sir Liber, wanting cash, This paper money stole, And the names were wanting, soon he placed, To make the paper whole. — When this was told unto the King, He thought it right good fun ; And said, " Sir Liber, I applaud The deed that you have done : For gentle folks and honest men I thoroughly detest; But toadies, thieves, and hypocrites, I think, are far the best. Sir Willoughby, Sir Geraldine, Sir William, too, of Spain, Sir Felton, also, I disgraced, But let the rogues remain. Now I hare got the men I want, Who'll bow to all I say, The Colonel, Lennoc, Owen, and Lords Percy and Bombay. Now merry Andrew I have got, And idiot Sambo, too ; And in the South a Major bold, Who dirty work will do. But as for you,- Sir Liber, I Am grieved that we must part ; Indeed, to lose so great a rogue, It cuts me to the heart. But you shall have a character, The best that I can write, That other men may think you still A worthy honest knight."
So let Ui ling, long lire the King ! And laud bis actions rare ; And Freenttn all, to Robert's ball, Throng— ye are welcome there.
