To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator.

Sir, —Being a friend to fair play, and one of the several much injured individuals who have been most unexpectedly called upon to fill the now arduous duties of a Militiaman, in consequence of my name appearing as one of the first in the alphabet, may I be permitted/ to offer a remark or two on the gross injustice and un/ fairness of the same, it being quite unprecedented in si^ nilar cases in England to elect a Militia save by ballot There are in this place down in the list 1,200 or 1,400-ntunes of those liable to be called upon to servei the act of injustice to myself and others is at once ren\ dered apparent, as the last letters in the alphabet will not,\ in all probability, be called upon to serve for a year or t^o at the least, and in the lapse of time, the reasonable chances are, that myself and many of the other persons whose names are now down will hav£ left the place altogether. What, may I ask, would be the result if they were to have recourse to this ludicrous method of doing business in a large community like England ? take for instance the juiy list. Apologizing for the space 1 have occupied, I am, Sir, Yours, &c, One of the B. B's. June 12th, 1845. -
