To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator.

Sir, —The appointments which have been made under the Militia Bill in this district, do not appear to have given universal satisfaction. Without questioning that those comprised in the list may be good men and true, or desiring to enter into the detail of particulars, which would be invidious, I think it will be admitted that his Honor the Superintendent, in making them (for it is understood that the commissions were left blank, to be filled up at his discretion), either did not consult general opinion, or has been guided by indiscreet and incompe-

tent advisers. — Why is Captain Daniell omitted, who is the senior officer of those settlers who have borne commissions in her Majesty's service ? Why is Major Baker passed over ? He has seen service, and has been very active in training the Tborndon division of volunteers. Other names will occur to your readers of men who ought to have been included in the list ; but these omissions I have just mentioned are obvious to every one. I am, Sir, your obedient servant, A Volunteer. Wellington, May 23, 1845.
