NOTICE.

YYHEREaS his Excellency Governor Fitzioy, by virtue of the power and authority vested in him by an Ordinance of the Governor and Council of the said Colony, intituled " An Ordinance for raising a Militia within the colony, Session V, No. 1," has authorized and directed me, the Major in command of the Wellington Battallion of the New Zealand Militia, to cause two hundred of the Inhabitants of Wellington, liable under the said Ordinance to serve in the Militia, to be torthwith embodied, armsd, and drilled, to do constant duty until further orders. Persons liable to serve in the Militia of the district-of Wellington, desirous of volunteering for this duty, are requested to enrol their names, without delay, at the residences of Captains Wakefield, Durie, Compton, and Dorset, or Adjutant Macdonogh. SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE.

ARRIVALS. May 17— Schooner Mana, 27 tons, Munn, from Kaikoras, with oil. May 18 — Schooner Black Warrior, 10 tons, Anderson, from Port Cooper, with oil.

DEPARTURES. May 16. — Schooner Ocean, 30 tons, Ferguson, for the East Coast. May 18.— Brigantine Star of China, 112 tons, Tinley, for Nelson and Sydney. May 20. — Government Brig Victoria, 200 tons, Richards, for Auckland, with Ordinance stores. Same day. — Schooner Gypsey, 35 Moncur,for Auckland. Same day. — Brigantine Scotia, 68 tons, Ward, for Sydney, with oil. By the Mana we learn that the whaling season has commenced well at the Kai-koras, Bell's party having caught' four, and Fyfe's party, two whales. By the Black Warrior we also learn that at the island Motouna Haime's party have caught two whales. When the Ann and Sara7i left Cloudy Bay, the boats of the various stations were all in chase, the whales setting in very numerous. A topsail schooner was signalled from the eastward, on Thursday afternoon. She came in and anchored off Point Halswell, and left next morning. She is supposed to have been the Gij)S>/ put back.

NOTICE TO CORRESPONDENTS. We have received a letter signed " Clodhopper" on the price of wheat, in answer to a " Settler's letter" — which want of room compels us to defer inserting till next iveek. We have received a letter from Wanganui, signed " A Settler" which, from its personalities, toe decline to insert. We are sorry at any time to exclude the admission of opinions, or what our correspondents may consider complaints founded on just grounds, hut we think this may be done temperately and loithout personalities. j Notice. — This being the anniversary of her Majesty's birth- day, will be kept as a holiday at the Bank and Public Offices.
