To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator and Cook's Straits Guardian.
Sir, — 1 have been much surprised at the present disproportion in the pi ices of wheat and flour in the market. Hntt wheat sells at present at 3s. Gd. per bushel of CO lb. 40 Bushels of wheat will produce on an average a ton of flour.
The above amount would be the price of a ton of first flour, which sells in the market at £13. I can only attribute this oversight to the want of mills in the colony, those employed being unable to keep pace with the demand for flour. When the mill at Kaiwarra comes into operation, the price of wheat may be expected to improve, but even with this additional power there will still be room for another mill, to convert into flour the increased amount of grain which Avill be produced next year. I am, Sir, Your obedient servant, A Settler.
We understand that 200 of the Militia are to be drafted out here ; A. E. M'Donogh, Esq. ha* been appointed Adjutant ; the officers commissions have arrived in blank, to be filled up by his Honor the Superintendent.
Private letters received yesterday from London state that one of Mr. Earp's ships is laid on for Wellington, to leave on the- 10th January.
We are glad to announce the arrrival of P. D. Hogg, Esq., who is about to resume his duties in this port as Sub.-Collector of Customs for the southern district. We are sure that the l&erchants of Wellington "will, from their previous experience of Mr. Hogg, welcome his return to his old office with peculiar satisfaction. While on this subject we may state we have been informed that the Duties will not be Fetrospective.
The Bishop of New Zealand will hold an Ordination to-morrow (Trinity Sunday), whenJtfr. Govett, 8.A., of Worcester College, ©jcfQrd, will be admitted into Deacon's orders/*-!? is reported that Mr. Govett will be stationed at Waikanai for the present, to supply the place of Mr. Hadfield, who, we regret to say, still continues at Wellington in a very precarious state of health.
