To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator and Cook's Straits Guardian. Wellington, March 10, 1845.
Sir, —Having seen in ths " Documents appended to the Twelfth Report of the Directors of the New Zealand Company," a letter from Mr. G. B. Earp, " late Member of the Legislative Council of New Zealand," to the Secretary of the New Zealand Company, dated London, February 11, 1842, in which Mr. Earp stated that the Customs Revenue at Wellington, for the half year ending June 24, 1842, was £8000. He farther adds — that he (Mr. Earp) stated at a public meeting at Wellington, " that the Customs Revenue for the year would be £18,000, that the SubCollector of Customs was present at that meeting, and did not contradict him." Without making any remarks on Mr. Earp's letter, I shall give you an account of the amount of Customs Revenue collected at Wellington from the 26th August, 1841, the date of the establishment of Customs at this port, to the 30th September, 1844, the date of its abolition, by which the Governor of the New Zealand Company will see how grossly he has been imposed upon in giving credit to Mr. Eaip's statement, by making it the subject of a communication to Lord Stanley.
