Sir,—l have much pleasure in enclosing a copy of the courteous answer of His Excellency Sir George Gipps to the Memmorial of the inhabitants of Port Nicholson praying for military protection, and beg you will give it publicity in the Spectator that our fellow colonists may be aware of the ready attention of Sir George Gipps to their application. I am, Sir, Your obedient servant, Henry W. Petre.

(Copy.) Colonial Secretary's Office, Sydney, New South Wales, 13th Feb., 1845. Sir, — I am directed by his Excellency Sir George Gipps to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 25th ultimo, covering a Memorial from the inhabitants of Port Nicholson, New Zealand, invoking military assistance from this Government in consequence of the outrages committed by the aboriginal New Zealanders ; and I have the honor to inform you that within twenty-four hours after the receipt of your letter, and of the Momorial which accompanied it, an application for military assistance reached Sir George Gipps from his Excellency the Governor of New Zealand ; and that two companies of the 96th Regiment will in consequence be despatched to Auckland with as little delay as possible.
