PORT PHILLIP.
Our papers are to the 30th November — the leading topics of discussion are the introduction of Pentonville men, under little or no restriction, into the district, and the manner in which Lord Stanley appears to have treated the representations made by the Port Phillippians, on various subjects, especially " Separation." The Port Phillip Gazette contains the following :—: — " Neil Black, Esq., an old and respectabla colonist, has returned to this district by the Royal George — Mr. Black had several interviews with Lord Stanley while in London, having been the bearer of a memorial to his lordship from the settlers of the Port Phillip district. We are sorry to say he expressed his opinion very decidedly on the Separation question, and said, unless the Legislative Council approved of the measure, he could not think of granting Separation upon the suggestion of the Port Phillippians. Upon the other great question, the reduction in the price of land, he expressed himself very unfavourably; but when Mr. Black brought forward the subject of emigration, he stopped his mouth, saying — You need not ask any-
thing which requires money from the Home Government, because we will not give it. With regard to extending the Electoral franchise to squatters, his lordship did not express an unfavourable opinion ; he said, if the Legislative Council recommended it, he would nrge no objection against it.
Farming in Canada. — la Upper Canada a custom prevails of cultivating farms on, shares; as it is called — that is, upon joint accouut of the landowner and tenant.' The landlord furnishes land fenced, team, and half the seed, and receives half the produce, the tanant finding himself; or, the landlord furnishes land fenced, and receives one-third, the tenant finding team, and everything *lse.
Married. — Nov. 26, in Thorndon Chapel, by J. Woodward, Mr. Solomon Levy, of Wellington, to Jane, daughter of the late Mr. Aaron Harvey.
