To the Editor of the New Zealand Spectator, and Cook's Straits Guardian.

Sir, — Having heard some very curious statements lately relative to the public cemetery, and public reserves on Lambton-quay, I beg to call the attention of some of your correspondents to the subject, with a view to bringing the facts immediately before the colonists. These two plots of ground were, I believe, set apart for specific purposes; and the information required is, whether tbes.e purposes have been kept inyiolable, or whether they have heen in any way infringed. The plot of ground set apart for * public ceme • tery is, in itself, sufficiently small for the object contemplated, and cannot be otherwise appropriated without curtailing the rights of the public at large. Land also for public and Government purposes, it is hoped, will in process of time be reSuired in this port, for offices, depots, &c., to le whole amount of that laid out in the original surveys. The appropriation of these reserves is amatter of public interest, and many of (he colonists are anxious to have a statement laid before them of the original intentions for taking these lands, however small in amount, put of their selections, and of being made acquainted with the nature of the infringement, if any, upon their rights, and the objects for which these reserves were originally set apart. I remain, Sir, Your obedient servant, X.
