The Melbourne Merchants’ Shipping and Underwriters’ Association has received the following cable news : LONDON, Sth March. The Argonaut, ship, bound from London to Adelaide, put back to London on the 2nd to repair damages received in a collision with tire Bombay. The latter vessel sank. The lien Lomond arrived on the Sth from Melbourne ; also, the Old Kensington from Melbourne: City of Adelaide from Port Augusta; Austracan from Port Victor; Gateside from Kingston; Ramsay and Windsor Castle from Brisbane; Daylight from Champion Bay. The schooner wli cli lias been in course of building in Evans Bay by the Patent Slip Company was launched on Saturday, and was named the Poneke, the ceremony of christening having been performed by Miss Wliitehouse. The Poneke is one of the largest wooden vessels which has been constructed in Wellington, and is very neatly and substantially put together, and reflects no small credit on her builders and designer. Her dimensions are :—-Length, 80ft.; beam, 19ft.; depth of hold, Sft.; register, 79 tons.’ The schooner sits very nicely on the water, and as she possesses good lines she should prove a fast sailer. She was purchased lately by Messrs. Wadclell and McLeod for the timber trade, and is to be under the command of Captain Ellis.
The number of wrecks reported for the present year, to date of January 19, amounted to S 7. The Merope and the Schiehallion, wool ships, were first reported in the Merchant Shipping and Underwriters’ telegram. pubMshed in the Melbourne Argils under date Feb. 27. A later t-legram, dated London, March 2, notes the Rcbiehallion’s arrival, and also that of t.he Waitangi, so it would appear that the earliest wool ships finished their voyages, as they had begun them, together. Notice has been posted in the Custom House to the effect that bo s educated in the Naval Training School, Kolrimarama, Auckland, are now available for the sea service. Masters and owners of vessels re gistered at or trading wi ll New Zealand are invited to take these boys as apprentices, as by so doing they will seemre the services of lads trained for the sea, and at the same time render material assistance in giving effect to the main object for w icli the institution has been established, viz., that of obtaining a supply of well trained seamen for the rapidly increasing mercantile marine of the colony. The tonnage loading on the berth at London (Jan. 24) for India, China, and the Cape of Good Hope, amounted ty 57.910 tons ; and for Australia and New Zealand, to 45.371 tons. There is still (January 26) some inquiry for tonnage to the Eas‘ and the colonies. Coal freights remain firm, with no marked change in the rates. In homeward transactions there is very little doing. Trade in general is much depressed, owing chiefly to the uncertainty as to the resul of the negociations now going on between Russia and Turkey. This causes much uneasiness, and no revival of business can be looked for until a final, settlement of that question has been agreed upon. Messrs. Brain and Bishop, the well-known shipbuilders of Mechanics’ Bay, Auckland, launched from their establishment, on the 7th iust., a handsome fore-and-aft schooner of 5<P tons register. She has been some time on the stocks, so that her timbers are well seasoned, and in every respect, says the Auckland Herald, she is as neat a little craft as could be turned out of any establishment in this city. Her model is very, good, fine lines, and has every appearance of making her mark as a fast sailer ; and while particular attention has been paid to the sailing qualities, her carrying capacity, which is compatible with the size, should make the boat a profitable one. The dimensions are :— Length of keel, 58 feet ; beam, 172feet: depth of hold. 7A- feet. At presentshe draws about 2 feet of water, and is expected to draw not more than G feet when fully loaded. The timber used in the constru.-tion o' the vessel is the usual pohutakawa for knees and ribs, covered with heart of k uri planking, copi>er-fastened throughout, and has been i-uilt to tke the highest class at Lloyd’s. As ilie schooner is called the Griffin, the usual elaborate work at the figure-head is appr priate to the name, Mr. Brain having neatly carved a griffin’s ead, with a couple of smaller ones at the stern, a very creditable piece of work, and in harmony with the whole of the vessel. The Griffin will be re dy for sea in about a week, when she will ma e a run down the harbor, and we have little doubt will realise the expectations of her builders. THE LORD OF THE ISLES. The s.s. Mo a on Monday night proceeded down to the Heads in search of the ship Lord of the Isles, to tow her into port. About midnight the steamer reached the Heads, and on making a few signals, the flash of a blue light indicated the whereabouts of the ship, which had anchored about a quarter-of-e-mile outside. The night was beautifully fine, and sa-e the sullen roar of a southerly swell, as it broke with a bright gleam over the many reefs and rocks at the entrance to the harbor, all was quite still as the Moa ranged alongside the ship. The cheery voice of Pilot Holmes was the first to break the stillness, and after a few words as to the price for tonnage. &c., all was bustle and hurry aboard both vessels, preparing to get under weigh. The few passengers which the Moa had brought out soon scrambled on to the ship, and were heartily welcomed there by her genial skipper, Gaptain Piper. The tow line was passed out, and the merry song of the sailors, as the anchor was slowly weighed up, reverberated from the high hills around, and blended strangely with the truly lovely scene. The night, as said before, was beautifully fine. The moon was at its fullest, and it seemed to outshine even the brilliant light on Pencarrow Heads ; while many objects on the shove could be seen with startling distinctness. Just on the horizon was discernible several sails of small craft as they slowly worked their way towards the Heads, while the good ship Lord of the Isles herself rolled lazily on a long southerly swell. At haP'-past 1 o’clock on Tuesday morning she tripped her anchor, and then the Moa steamed ahead, but as a brisk breeze from tlie N.W. was blowing it was slow work coming up the entrance. Shortly after 5 o’clock the ship anchored in the Powder Ground, and a few hours afterwards Captain Holliday boarded her, and cleared her. The Lord of the Isles is a vessel several years old, and has been built more for the carriage of cargo than speed. She has, however, made a fair passage out of 94 days from port to port, and S 4 from land to land. She comes consigned to the New Zealand Shipping Company, and has on board about 1400 tons of general merchandise ; no passengers. The steward of the ship, named James Conhell, died on 3rd January from inflammation of the lungs, and his place had to be taken by one of the apprentices. The following is a report of the passage out:—Left London on the 15th December, and the Downs next day Had very light In", and .s’ winds through the Channel ; passed the Lizards on December 21st ; sighted Madeira on the Ist January, having carried fresh westerly breezes to there. On the 3rd January got the N.E. trades in SOdeg. N., which proved moderate. Passed St. Antonio on the Sth January, and four days afterwards lost the trade w lids in 40deg. N. ; thence experienced moderate S.s.AV. and S. winds, and crossed the Line on the 16tli January, in 26deg. AY. ; got the S.E. trades in 2deg. S., and lost them in 25deg. The prime meridian was crossed on Feb. stli, and the Cape rounded on the 10th. Had moderate westerly winds to the Kerguelen Island, which were passed on the 20tli February; thence fresh westerly' till arrival at Cape Farewell on the loth instant. Had light northerly wind* as far as Terawiti, and from there till arrival off the Heads on Saturday' afternoon a fresh breeze. Pilot Holmes boarded her promptly same evening, but a fierce gale springing up same night from the N. NY., she was blown to the southward of Cape Campbell. At 2 o’clock on Monday morning, however, tlie wind chopped to the southward and blew light, carrying the ship close up to the Heads where she anchored at 5 o’clock on Mouday evening, and from there was towed up to port as above stated. NOTICE TO MARINERS. Customs Department (Marine Branch), Wellington, March 19, 187 S. Notice is hereby given that on and after the evening of Monday, the 22nd day of April next, a light will be exh bited from a lighthouse which has been erected on the southern point of tlie Moeraki Peninsula, ou the East Coast of the Middle Island, the characteristics of which are as follow :—The tower is 2Sft in height, built of wood and painted white. Tlie light will be a fixed white light of the third order, visible all round as far as the land will a*low. Tlie light will be elevated about 170 feet above the sea, and, allowing fifteen feet for the height of the eye, will be seen at a distance of nineteen nautie miles in clear weather, and at lesser distances according to tlie state of the atmosphere. On the same night which the Moeraki light, is exhibited, tlie white light on i Cape Wanbrow, will be -■ ltered to red, and the fixed red light on the end of Breakwater to green, This green light will not, however, be exhibited during bad weather, when the danger lights (two white horizontal with a red light between them) are shown from the flagstaff.
