THE BOUQUET. She sent me a charming bouquet Aj a pledge of her love so true, And around the stems Of these floral gems Was a delicate ribbon of blue ; The dearest flowers to me were they . That ever were kissed with de w. For they soothed my heart with a tale. Like the notes of soft minstrelsy, Which she bade them repeat Ih eloquence sweet, And carry in secret to me — A tale of love which in silence they bore In their fragrant bosoms to me. This story of beauty and bliss Never mortal in words can tell, Which the flowers do keep In an odorous sleep i Till awoke by Love’s magical spell. It speaks to the soul of a passion deep, Which no changes of life can quell I doted upon this bouquet, For it gave me a sweet relief From a sleepless pain In my heart and brain ; But alas ! the respite was brief. Ah ! why did it bring a vision of bliss, And leave me a burden of grief ! As I watched the blossoms decay, I read in their vanishing bloom This lesson of truth — That beauty and youth Time ruthlessly hastes to consume ; Yet my heart would not learn this truth till Fate Had buried its joys in the tomb. *■»**■** Years have fled since those eloquent flowers Bore her message of love so true — Still I dream of those love-laden hours The bouquet and the ribbon of blue.
