WELLINGTON HIGHWAY BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir, —Like tlie Chairman of the Highway Board, you are, I think, mistaken in reference to the grants from the General and Provincial Governments to the Wellington District Highway Board, and your remarks on the subject are calculated to mislead. The Provincial Government owes the Board about £IOOO, being part of the £SOOO voted by the Provincial Council for division among all the Boards in the province. Hone of this grant has yet been paid. The Provincial Government may have to ask an advance from tlie colonial chest to e n ab. e them 10 pay the sum ; but the advance will be to the province, and not to the Board, and will certainly not in any way interfere with the 13s. 4d. in the £ voted, which the General Government has promised to all the Hoad Boards of the colony, in pursuance of the policy embodied in the Local Government Bill of last I trust the Government will see its way clear to paying both grants, as it will confer a great boon on out-settlers. . ~ ~ . . I trust you will favor me by inserting tins m your paper, and you will greatly oblige yours, &c., Richard Smith. Horokiwi Valley, February 4.
