IN DEFENCE.

TO TIIE EDITOR OP TIIE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir, —our new Mayor, it appears, is to be talked down, written down, and when down jumped upon. At his first sitting as Mayor, Mr. Hutchison did not choose to make an ass of himself by attempting, at a minute’s notice, to reform all the abuses which have crept into the City Council, but like a sensible man he preferred to investigate matters previous to making any suggestion or proposal whatever. The nresiding genius of a newspaper has this evening acquainted us that “had not Mr. Gisborne aspired to contest the representation of the city, he would certainly have been allowed to become Mayor:” or, in other words, that each of those high-minded and honorable gentlemen, comprising four-fifths of the most influential citizens of Wellington who signed the requisition to Mr. Gisborne, promising their votes, influence, and support, must have wilfully belied themselves. Before we swallow such an idea as this, we shall require something more than the ipse dixit of a gentleman who just now naturally feels inclined to run a muck at anything or anybody. The editor of the Aryus has the impertinence to inform us that Mr. Hutchison is utterly unfit for the position of Mayor. I think I may conclude by remarking that that was evidently not the opinion of the five or six hundred persons who cheerfully recorded their votes, to secure that position for him.— I am, &c.
