A few small specimens from the Caledonian claim, crushed a few days ago, yielded 14.310'0zs of gold. The resignation of Mr C. E. Baugh ton of his seat in the House of Eepreseutatives is notified in the Gazette.

The “ Colonist.” gives the following particulars of the fire which is reported as occurring over the wide district which comprises Stanley Brook Bun in the Nelson province, and which has produced considerable loss. This run, with its recent addition, covers about ten square miles of country, and not a little adjacent hush land, heavily timbered, has also been visited by the fire, the cause of which is unknown. Stanley Brook district lies on the Pigeon Valley road, from Wakefield to Upper Motueka Valley. It is the property of Mr John Beit, late of Nehou, and who is now in England, and was richly grassed with long grass from the river to the summit of the hills. The dwelling house, cowsheds, and other outbuildings and stockyard, fencing, &c, on Stanley Brook run have been burned, and Mr James Crichton, who was in charge ot the place, had to flee from the fire with his wife and children down the river bed tor a couple ot miles, and camp on a patch or green grass land. The buildings, we believe, were insured for £2OO.
