A COMPLAINT.
[TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL.] Sir, —I have very much to complain of the everlasting sports, games, and races, that are taking place in the Wairarapa. First there were races on the Parafciki, then two days at Greytown, then two days at Masterton, and now there are to be autumn races in February again. Af; the last Masterton races I had to turn shepherd for two days that my men may have a holiday, and spend what they had, and in February I suppose that I must do the same. Now, what I and others complain of
is that the intended races arc not got up by the people themselves for a legitimate holiday at Christmas time, but by one or two individuals for the solo purpose of getting a few advertisements and a little extra printing. These frequent amusements unsettle my men, and derange my management, and it is time that a stand was made against these frequent interruptions to business of all kinds. The apologists of racing, because it favors the breeding of horses, allowed the best prize at the last Masterton races to be carried off by a stranger. It is all stuff and nonsense. The object is to get money out of people's pockets, and in February it is to be attempted again. I hope my fellow settlers will discountenance them, and that the people themselves will see the folly of throwing their money away to plea?e one or two iuconsiderate persons. Five witlun a short time in the Wairarapa, and now another proposed ! I hope my fellow inhabitants and men of business will not subscribe to them. As they concern the Greytown people as well, I hope they will have the good sense to keep away from this untimely amusement.—l am, &c, A Masterton Well-wisher. Masterton, January 24.
