A maiden assize of the Supreme Court ha 3 been held afc Nelson, on which occasion Mr Justice Richmond was presented with a pair of white gloves by the Sheriff. The "News of the World" thus explains the delay of the mail:—The present steamer lias been detained for the purpose of carrying on the through English mails delayed on the overland railroad by the snowing up of a portion of the line. This is the first time since the inauguration of the trans-continental road that this has happened, but the storm was one of exceptional severity. The probabilities are that no detention will occur in the future, as the company has a large force of men always ready to clear the route ; snowsheds are placed in the most exposed places, and snow ploughs (to be affixed to tho locomotives) are kept ready at all the stations. The travel between San Francisco and New York goes on steadily, and we received our mails in this city from New York with great regularity. The cars are warmed by patent stoves, aud provisions are carried on them, in case of detention between stations.
