WESTLAND.
The “ Grey River Argus” reports that a rash attempt at suicide w r as made by a man named Stephen Cattle, who was defendant in an action with Jane Anderson in the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Grey mouth. The man, who was the worse for drink, entered through the backway to the premises known as the Court IToues Hotel, and without saying a word to anyone drew a knife from his pocket, and proceeded to cut his throat, and before he could be prevented had inflicted a frightful wound. Drs Morice and Smith were sent for, and sewed up the wound, and Cattle, who was very violent, was for his own safety strapped down. He is going on as well as can be expected. Some of the effects of the recent flood in the Grey river are thus told by the “ Grey Valley Times” :—At the junction of the Little Grey theflood was thehighest witnessed there for ten years past, and the river has encroached upon the township to such an extent as to endanger the site. The farmers have been amongst the heaviest sufferers by the visitation, and many acres of cropped land have been laid waste by deposits of sand and mud, whilst large strips of land under cultivation have been carried away entirely.
