By our telegrams we observe that Mr Justice Chapman expressed an idea synonymous with that Mr Justice Johnston in reference to the desirability of applying the lash to offenders in cases of assaults upon women. In sentencing the prisoner M'Carthy on Tuesday, his Honor stated his intention, should cases of the kind become frequent in this province, of inflicting, in addition to the ordinary punishment of imprisonment, that of castigation with the cat-o’-nine-tails. Some deterrent influence of the kind is becoming imperative on account of the increase of offences of the nature which drew forth his Honor’s remarks.
