WAIRARAPA RACES, 1871.

(From our own Correspondent). The first day of the above race meeting commenced on Boxing Day on the Grey town race course. The weather was favorable, and the piesence of jMurrray's Circus band tended to enliven a scene which was more than ordinary devoid of animation and the usual auxilaries of the race-course. There were remarkably few pedestrians present, but more than the usual number of male and female equestrians. There were also a number of carnages on the ground, which have heretofore not been so numerous as they are on race courses nearer Wellington. The first event was the Maiden Plate, a sweepstakes of one guinea each, with £2O added, and for which four horses were entered, namely:— Mr T. JM'Carthy's Raven's Feather, (J. Cotter) 3 „ T. Ray's Rob Roy 2 „ R. Greathead's Nutwich 3 „ H. Renall's Steel Trap 4 The racing lay between the two first named horses, which was smartly contested, the mare in the end proving the winner. Wairarapa Stakes, a sweepstakes of .-£1 10s, with £25 added. Two miles and a distance. This also was a single event, for which two horses only ran. These were Mr Fuller's Commodore, and Mr M'Glashan's Lacenfield, the latter carrying of the stakes without snuch difficulty. The Cavalry Race followed, for which

•there were three entries, Mr Tankerslily's chestnut gelding beating Mr I Hughe's grey horse easily. | The Gate Purse was a very good race, for which the following were entered : Lucenfield .., ... ... ... 1 1 Bulrownie ... ... ... ... 22 Nai Nai' 3 This was a capital race. In the first he.it the old favorite Balrownie, not being contented to surrender his hard earned laurels to a new comer without a severe struggle, kept close to the heels of his antagonist, but had to occupy second place at the winning post in the first heat. Nai Nai occupying that, position in the second. A Hack Race followed for which five heats, being won by Mr J. Greathorses entered, the stakes, after three head's hack, Electric Spark. The Licensed Victuallers' Purse secured six entries, three only coming to the scratch, namely : Mr J. Hay ward's Balrowaie ... 2 11 " M'Glashan's Ronald 1 3 dis " Fuller's Commodore ... ... 3 2 This was decidedly the best event of the day, a very sharp contest being maintained between the two first named horse, during the whole of the first heat and part of the second, when Ronald had to surrender the second place to Commodore. This concluded the events of the first dav.
