The Late Bush in Westland. —The special correspondent of the “West Coast Times,” writing of the late rush to the Totara Lagoon, says:—This new rush has been steadily progressing since my last communication. Kead-races and tail-races are the order of the day. Fortunately, the lead is so favorably situated that neither of these require the expenditure of much labor or time in their execution. Several parties have already washed prospecting paddocks with such satisfactory results as to give fresh courage to all hands and make them work with a will. The number of payable claims have not increased much since my last. Of the very few parties who have visited us since then, some got on what they considered payable claims, and others have left, no doubt discouraged by sinking a duffer or two; but it should never be forgotten that the same terrace, with the like formation, extends many miles, and that even within the mile of lead found payable, there are exceptional cases which are not so, and consequently it requires perseverance and continued prospecting to thoroughly test the locality. Business matters are still much about the same. There are two stores and a bakery on the ground, and more than one butcher is talking of starting, but, wonderful to relate, the inevitable “ public” has not yet put in an appearance.
