Mr John Batey, a stockrider, formerlv of Napier, was drowned on the Prince of Wales Birthday, in a stream near the Volunteer Review Ground, while attempting to save a boy’s life. Joseph Quinn, the youth, was drowned at the same time. A man named Simmonds has been killed while blasting a rock at Mount Eden, and another was injured. The volunteer review here was a great success. A man named Schofield, in the Inverness, had his collar bone broken. The claims here are looking up. The Tokatea has yielded l,oooozs for the month. Resolutions were unanimously passed condemnatory of the committee, and demanding their resignations en masse. A vote of thanks was passed to the “ West Coast Times” for for ventilating the question. A boat belonging to the James Nicol Fleming capsized in the harbor to-day, and John M‘Farlane, a seaman, was drowned. The remainder of the crew were picked up by boats from the French barque Union, and by a waterman. November 14. The body of Cragie, drowned in July last, was found in the harbor to-day. November 15. The ship May Queen has arrived from London 81 days out. The passengers are all well. The ship E. P. Bouverie, 92 days out from Glasgow, is at the Heads, and a brig, supposed to be the Sarah, from Boston. Sailed—The Southern Cross, barque, for Lyttelton. November 16. Sailed —2 p.m., Taranaki, for the North. Hi catting the Taranaki’s anchor, the davit was carried away, and a seaman named George Stewart fell overboard. He was rescued, after he had twice sunk, by the shipping reporter of the “ Otago Daily Times” and a waterman, and, the steamer stopping, he was placed on board. Arrived—Venus, brig, from Mauritius, with sugars for here and Lyttelton.
