WAIRARAPA AFFAIRS.
The Greytown Road Board were busily engaged the whole of Saturday in assessing the rate on the several divisions of the district, which was imposed at the last annual meeting. Four applications for the construction of roads were made ; two for the completion of lines within the township, one for making a much needed road on the eastern side of Morrison’s Bush, and one for forming and metalling No. 1 line, leading from Tauherenikau to Kaiwaiwai. The town acres were assessed at Is 9d each ; the suburban land at 9d per acre; and the other portions of the district at Id, 2d, and 6d per acre, according to the natural value of the land, and its proximity to the lines on which the money is proposed to be expended. It is to be hoped that the present summer will not be allowed to pass over without these roads being proceeded with. A meeting of the Moroa Road Board had been previously held, where instructions were given to the collector to collect the rates forthwith ; and thanks were returned to the Superintendent for the courtesy he had shown the Board, and the consideration he had given to the wants of the district, which contrasted favorably with the treatment they had received at the hands of the preceding Executive. Mr M‘Donogh, the Sub-Insurance Commissioner, lias be.cn delivering addresses in the several townships in the Wairarapa during the past fortnight, and has been very successful. He bas effected 68 policies, amounting in the aggregate to £IB,OOO. The arrangements for holding a show of stock at Masterton in Christmas week have been completed, which will include horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs, and a four-acre paddock has been taken by the Association for the exhibition. The programme for the Wairarapa races to be held at Greytown on Boxing Day, and the dav following, will be advertised in the Independent as soon as completed. Much interest is felt in the proposal to establish a public libararv in Greytown, and I am happy to state that there is every prospect that the movement will be crowned with success. Under the Wairarapa Lands Management Act there will be a sum available for this object of upwards of £3OO, in addition to the £IOO generously offered by the Hon. Mr Waterhouse, though it is not impossible that it may he sought to be directed to other purposes. It may. however, be well to remind the trustees, that under the Provincial Education Act, the Education Board, out of general funds and school rates, will provide school-houses, as well as teachers, books, and stationery, for the several schools throughout the province.
