LAND ON DEFERRED PAYMENTS.

[to THE EDITOR OE THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL.] Sir, —I observe that your Palmerston correspondent in bis last week’s letter mentions that “ a goodly number of intending settlers are anxiously waiting for the Provincial Government to give effect to the Land on Deferred Payments Act.” Now, it really is to be hoped that some action may be taken in this matter without delay.. Every month that passes by, sees money wasted, that might (were this act in force) be expended in making homes out of the wilderness. The authorities seem willing to expend almost any sum in introducing new chum immigrants, and yet they take no steps to induce the seasoned colonists we already have in the province, to remain with us as permanent settlers. With regard to the rumor which is abroad as to the probability of the Government abandoning the road running through Palmerston to Rangitikei, and which is alluded to by your correspondent; all I can say is, that if they do abandon it, they will raise a nice hornet’s nest about their ears. When it is considered that the land along this line for some distance from the township, was sold at an upset price of from £6 to £2O per acre, on the understanding that the road was to be pushed on without delay—you will be able to form an idea of the indignation its abandonment would produce among the purchasers. There are several other matters in connection with the Manawatu works that I wish to draw attention to, but will avoid encroaching on your space until after the close of the session.—l am, &c,, Palmerston.
