Auckland, September 16. Bray, who has committed a swindle to the extent of 7502, has absconded to Hobart Town. . Measures have been taken for his arrest on arrival. Extraordinary rich stone has been obtained from the Caledonian mine. Shares are now quoted at 1652. Thames, at 29210 s ; Otago, 427 s6d ; Tokatea, 42 12s 6d • Nonpareil, 52 17s 6d ; Central Italy, 2 1 10s; Excelsior, 1 Shotover, 8s 6d. A Masonic lodge, under the title of the Sir Walter Scott, has been opened at the Thames. The revenue of the Provincial Government for the last quarter was 60,460 Z, and the expenditure 29,6652. Napier, September 18.
A stupid canard got afloat here on Saturday to the effect that Te ICooti was in the Big Swamp at Omahu, within fourteen miles of town. Tareha posted sentries at the Sixteen Mile Post and Roy’s Hill. It turned out that the alarm had been caused by a picnic party of children under Mrs Lowry. Taranaki, September 1.9.
Mr Charles Hursthouse’s house was burnt to-day, and all his manuscripts were destroyed.
A letter has been received from Col. Thompson, stating that Mr Busby, of the Bay of Islands, is dead. Mr Chilman has written to say that several capitalists are making enquiries respecting the utilisation of the iron sand.
A rumor is current that Major Atkinson is to be appointed Commissioner of the Armed Constabulary, and the appointment is spoken of with approval. A meeting respecting the Post Office site takes place on Wednesday, Wanganui, September 21.
The steamer St. Kilda was sold at auction this day, by Mr Beauchamp, for £1630, to the Wanganui Steam Navigation Company. The s.s. St. Kilda arrived here to-day frem the Manukau.
James Busby, of Waitangi, died in London on July 15th, of bronchitis. Nelson, September 18. Mr W. Wastney, M.P.C., died this morning. The bodies of Mr Webber and Mrs Reynolds, drowned in the late boat accident, were found to-day.
During Saturday night the Basilisk slipped her cable, and grounded on the sand bank in the harbor. All yesterday morning was spent in getting her off, and she sailed at 10.30 a.m. to-day for Wellington. Hokitika, September 15.
Cassius’ claim at Ross has come upon wash dirt from six to seven feet thick, which gives half a dwt to the dish. The bar channel is much improved.
De Loree, for a robbery of jewellery was sentenced to three years; Cameron, for robbery of money, to four years ; and Levy, for forgery, to eight years. September 20.
Mr James Britton Clark has been elected Mayor vice Mr J. M. Higgins, resigned. The wife of Carl Rohloff, was found dead. An inquest has been held, and the following verdict was returned. That the deceased came to her death by congestion of the brain caused by taking an overdose of alcoholic liquor. Christchurch, September 15.
The grain market is inactive, except the shipment now being forwarded per Yelocidade to Auckland. There are a few sales of wheat. Holders demand 5s to 5s 3d. and farmers are loth to accept anything under 5s for top samples. Flour, 12. lower. Oats meet good support at 2s 6d to 2s 8d ; stored samples, 2s 5-Jd to 2s 6£d for forward delivery. Good malting barley fetches readily 3s to 3s 6d. Butter, ready market, 7d to 7£d for good samples. Potatoes, scarce, at 22. 15s to 32. Hams and bacon almost unsaleable, except at prices which leave considerable loss. A public meeting last night passed resolutions for an intercolonial and interprovincial four-oared boat race on the Heathcote estuary for 1502., or at the option of the winner for a plate of that value.
September 20. The Chamber of Commerce has passed a resolution approving the Government proposal to tax cereals. Oamaru, September 19. The Oamaru harbor works haying
been partly suspended owing to the Provincial Government failing to make the progress payment in accordance with their agreement with the dock trust, a large public meeting was held here last night, when resolutions were unanimously passed, asking the intervention of the General Government to carry on the works.
Dunedin, September 15. A man named White has been killed at Switzer’s by a fall of earth. Michael Cowitan, a farmer at Arrow, was killed by falling from his horse. Bridget Gee pleaded guilty to concealment of birth, and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. There is little doing in wheat, but small sales are effected at 5s 3d. Flour quiet, only in trade transactions ; quotations, 142. Oats steady, 2s 2d to 2s 4d. Barley dull at 3s 9d. Barley overstocked, Telegraphic advices from Melbourne to the 6th report flour at 142. 10s to 152. Sugar firmer. September 19. The Schoolmasters’ Association have carried the following resolutions :—• “ That the Association, while strongly in favor of a colonial system of education, and approving ’generally of the proposed act, are of opinion that the system. of denominational schools sought to be introduced under the provisions of the aided schools clauses is highly objectionable, and calculated in course of time to affect very injuriously, if not entirely to subvert, the system of national education which forms the main feature of the act.
“ 2- That all teachers should be classified according to their respective attainments,experience,and success in teaching, and that the amount of salary paid to such teachers should be determined by such classification
“ 3. That elementary education should be free and compulsory. “ 4. That, in the Association’s opinion, if fees are to be charged by the General Board for districts, they should fix the minimum fee, the whole of which should be paid to the teacher or teachers, the local committees having power to levy an additional fee for other purposes, as they see fit. “ 5. That in all cases the head-master, being held responsible for the efficiency of these schools, should select his assistants previous to their appointment by provincial boards as the case may be. “ 6. That payment by the result system has been tried and found unsatisfactory in many respects, particularly in lowering the quality of elementary education, and that any scheme embracing such a system cannot be approved of by the Association. « 7. That public schoolmasters should have one member elected by themselves to represent their interests at meetings of Education Boards.” September 20. Judge Chapman has delivered judgment in the case of Crooks v Proudfoot, in favor of the promoters of the Port Chalmers railway. Port Chalmers, Sept. 21. Arrived—2oth, late, Bengal, barque, from Newcastle ; 21.6 a.m., Gothenburg, from the Bluff. Sailed—Afternoon, Gamecock, ship, for Melbourne, with a cargo of preserved meats and grain. AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY. Melbourne, Sept. 9. At the Intercolonial Conference, a proposition will be submitted from the U.S.N.Z. Australian Mail Ship Company to carry mails via San Francisco to Australia, with a direct branch to New Zealand. A new silver coinage is proposed for Victoria. It is proposed to lengthen the dock at Williamstown at a cost of £26,000. Peter Brown, Presbyterian minister, and William Hamill are dead. Flour, Adelaide, £ls to £ls 10s; New Zealand wheat, os 3d ; oats, 3s 3d to 3s 6d; Tookeys, £2B 10s. Sugars are slightly easier. September 14. An accident occurred by collision on the Melbourne and Hobson’s Bay railway, Several were injured, but none severely. Maurice Devevaux, alias Sleghman, lately from New Zealand, was arrested for uttering spurious cheques. Supple’s sentei.ce has been commuted to imprisonment for life. The Intercolonial Postal Conference sits to-morrow. The representatives of
Adelaide, Sydney, and Tasmania arrived. The Post Office Amendment Act passed, the only change being a reducin the postage of newspapers to a halfpenny. More witnesses in the Tichbourne case are turning up. An inquiry is proceeding into charges against Young, Manager ot the National Bank. A Ministerial trip by the Nelson and Cerberus, down the bay, takes place to-morrow week. Sydney, Sept. 9. Sir James Martin, the Premier and the Attorney-General, Mr Lord, the Finance Minister, and Mr Docker, the Postmaster-General, left for Melbourne by the overland route this morning (September 4) to attend the conference on the border duties question, and also in reference to the mail service. Both the New South Wales and Victorian Governments have resolved upon withdrawing from the contract with the Peninsular and Oriental Company for the service via Suez.

Mr Goggin, a printer, who for some years carried on business at the Caxton office, Pitt street, went by her as a passenger, and his estate has since then been sequestrated by his creditors. Kelly the murderer of Crawford, who was found dead in Paramatta street, and Lindsay, for aiding and abetting, have been committed for trial. The Government have sold the balance of their remittable debentures, amounting to £257,500 at par to 4-J per cent.
The daughter of Mr Burrell, an old and respected magistrate, has been drowned by the upsetting of a boat in Sydney harbor. * The Zavistowskis sailed for Melbourne on Saturday after a very successful season. The new Opera Company gave its first performance to a crowded house at the Prince of Wales on Saturday. Much annoyance felt at the long detention of the Nevada’s mails at Auckland. Vogel’s announcement, that Webb intended to visit Australia in next steamer of his line, is not believed here, as Californian papers report his departure for New York. The report presented at the annual meeting of the Shipowner’s Association was satisfactory. Adelaide. Wheat and flour market dull; a strong downward tendency, Parcels sold at 4s 9d for export.
