Auckland, September 5. The ship Joshua Bates, with 286 Chinamen for Dunedin, put into Auckland. The vessel is in a leaky state, and the Chinamen are suffering badly from scurvy. The passengers have been placed on the island of Motuihi for a few days. They will then proceed to their destination. Two of the Chinamen died in harbor, and three the day before the , ship arrived. The Caledonian has declared a dividend of 3Z, and the Nonpareil one of Bs. The schooner Rifleman, for the Chatham Islands, was wrecked at Blind Bay, Great Barrier. All hands were saved. George Russell, a seaman on board the ketch Eagle, was lost during a gale. Taranaki, September 13. Patrick Gildea, a boarding-house keeper, hung himself this morning. A coroner's inquest was held, and a verdict returned to the effect that he committed suicide in a fit of temporary insanity. Mr Crompton, who was lately appointed sheriff, has resigned, as the appointment affects his seat in the Council. "Wanganui, September 9. Mr R. S. Low reports the cattle market dull. There have been no auctions during the week. Private transactions have been only for immediate consumption. Increased rates are not obtainable. Holders of sheep are waiting for better prices. The rain has caused great loss amongst the flocks. Gretmotjth, September 9. On Thursday the steamers Murray, Kennedy, and Charles Edward all struck the l?ar at Westport, while attempting to go out. In backing off, the Charles Edward and Murray collided. The Murray was compelled to return to the Greymouth wharf a little damaged. The others sailed for their respective ports. A crowded meeting was held at the Town Hall here last evening, when a resolution was paseed supporting Mr Harrison's motion. September 11. A large meeting of miners was held at No Town on Friday night, when resolutions were passed protesting against the mismanagement of the goldfields by the Nelson Government, and asking the Assembly for redress. Another meeting, at which resolutions to a similar effect were passed, was held at Abe's Gully on Saturday night. William Jones, a miner, was killed at Nelson Creek on Saturday, by falling from a flume 150 feet high. Christchurch, September 9. An elderly woman, named Grimsher, has hanged herself while in a fit of despondency. The inquest on the body resulted in a verdict of suicide while in a state of temporary insanity. A public meeting is called, to be held in a few days, in favor of Mr Macandrew's Middle Island resolutions. Timaru, September 9. At a public meeting, held last night at Temuka, there was a large attendance. In consequence of the Engineer's report, supporting the diversion of the railway two miles from the town, a committee was appointed to prepare a memorial requesting him to adopt the inland route. September 12. Dr M'Lean, an old and respected resident died, last night. Dunedin, September 8. The address of the counsel in the case of Reicheldt, under trial for alleged arson, occupied the whole day. Mr Smith spoke over four hours. The Judge will sum up to-day. The soft goodsmen, fearing an additional duty, have made extensive clearances ; £1,400 was paid for duty on drapery. The Opposition papers in Otago publish private telegrams stating that an income tax is proposed, and that the Government intend to seize the Provincial revenues.

The north escort has brought 10,000 ozs. gold. The jury on Reicheldt's case are unable to agree, and have now been locked up for five hours. The grand jury threw out bills against Russell, charged with arson at Tokomairiro, and against Carpenter, for stealing amalgam at Cromwell.
