THE WOOL MARKET.

(TO THE EDITOR OE THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL.) Sie, —In your paper of the 19th August last I find, under the commercial head, that 125,000,0001 bs. of wool are stated to have been kept from going to market in consequence of the fever raging in Buenos Ayres, and that after a disinfecting process it will find its way into consumption with a very depressing effect on prices. This piece of information is professedly obtained from a late San Francisco paper. Surely there must be some great mistake, at least as to quantity, in the statement respecting wool shipped usually from the part of South America in question. At 3331bs of wool to a bale the quantity would give about 375,000 bales. Now, if my memory does not betray me, wool is shipped from Buenos Ayres in bales and half bales, of 3001 bs and Isolbs respectively, or 2501bs and 1251b5, but taking the former as the quantities, and assuming bales and half-bales to be in equal proportions—an average of 2251bs is the result —and this would make the delayed shipment amount to nearly 600,000 bales of 2251bs each. I certainly have neTer found any statement showing a quantity shipped in one year from the part of South America where the fever has been so disastrous, or anything at all approaching the number of bales as estimated by myself. Unfortunately I cannot put my hand on any paper giving a statement of the export from Buenos Ayres, nor can I call to memory the number of bales shipped. I call attention to the statement because its tendency must be to have a very depressing effect upon the markets in these seas for wool and station property, and the truth of which should be obtained and published as early as possible, be it what it may.—l am, &c, S. R. Wairarapa, 28th August, 1871-
