RECEPTION OF THE HON. MR VOGEL.

We understand that the Hon. Mr Vogel is to be entertained by the Club on his return to Wellington. We are glad to learn that such a well-merited compliment is in store for him, although we should greatly prefer to see some demonstration more general in its character. Whatever difference of opinion may obtain with regard to the policy of the Government, as expounded by him, the recan be but one opinion as to the remarkable ability and success with which he has filled the mission entrusted to him. It is clear that, through his exertions, New Zealand holds a place in public estimation at home which it never held before ; and the high social and quasi-public honors paid Mr Vogel must be as gratifying to the colony as they are honorable to himself. It would be only becoming, therefore, to give fitting expression to the feeling of satisfaction which generally prevails at the successful result of a mission vitally affecting every interest in the Colony. Such a demonstration, and it need neither be elaborate nor costly, could not but be highly gratifying to Mr Vogel, as showing that the people of Wellington value his eminent public services, and desire to bury the memory of any unpleasantness that may have marked " the wretched past." On this account, therefore, we throw out the suggestion that the entertainment will have more significance if it assume a more general character than that of a dinner at the Club.
