The Cape Route.—Mr Burstall brought his proposal for a line of steamers via the Cape under the notice of the Government in the Parliament of Victoria. He explained, at a deputation on the subject to the Chief Secretary and other members of the Ministry, that the steamers he proposed to employ would perform the voyage in 40 days on the average, the contract time for the mails being one-fifth shorter than the service via Brindisi. The subsidy required was £IO,OOO per voyage, and there would be a vessel every month. Mr Dufly expressed his approval of the Cape route, but said the Government had received through Mr Verdon by this mail a proposal for a service on more favorable terms than those proposed by Mr Burstall. It was the intention of the Government, he intimated, to lay the whole matter before Parliament without delay.
