LATEST FROM THE THAMES.
News to the Evening of August 5, [New Zealand Herald.] The Caledonian have lodged another I, ounces, making the total in bank 11, ozs., with a very heavy retort on the fire. About 9 cwt. of specimens have been brought out since last night. The want of powder is becoming serious. The Kuranui, Una, Moanatairi, and others will be brought to a stand very shortly if a supply is not shortly forthcoming. The Herald, Waiotahi, and other batteries have resumed crushing, having obtained a small supply of coal. The market closed firmer. Caledonian, £195 ; Tookey, £3B; Thames, £3B; El Dorado, 15s; Nonpareil, 92s fid. The Nonpareil are taking out some splendid stone from the new low level. The All Nations will have about 120 ozs for three weeks’ crushing. [Morning News.] Mr Robert Graham lays a claim in respect to the Bright Smile surface ground, but the matter is in course of adjustment, and no difficulties are apprehended. Efforts iff favor of the establishment of a municipality, or separation from the province and formation of the Thames district into a country, are being given out. The crushing for the Eureka Hill Company shapes very well.
The Caledonian is still producing -specimens from the winze. Xt is said that the Caledonian tailings robbery case is not quite at an end yet. The following are the latest quotations in the sharemarket: —Caledonian, 195/. ; Thames, 38Z.; Otago, 4 1. ; City of Dunedin, 6Z.; El Dorado, 15s; Golden Calf, 2Z. 10s: Central Italy, 21 12s 6d ; Tookey, 38Z, . The following returns are to hand in the Bank of New Zealand this day Berkeley Castle tribute, 18 ozs 16 dwts.
Four Georges, 20 ozs. ■ Caledonian, 2,248 ozs, making a total to date from this claim of 10,313 ozs. [Evening- News.] The Golden Crown Tribute has 50 ounces of gold. The Caledonian has 14,069 ozs. More to come. The All Nations has 1450z5. of gold. The Brunswick has struck golden stone. Native meeting going on about Williamson and O'Neill THE VERY LATEST. Another 2,000 ounces has been lodged by the Caledonian. The total sum in hand amounts to 13,310 ounces. Probable yield, 15,500. THE HERALD’S THAMES LETTER OF THE 4TH. Caledonian. —I have nothing new 1 to report respecting this mine, the main run of gold being all that could be desired, and the winze the same. Heavy quantities of gold have been lodged during the day aud this will be continued until the specimens are all reduced. About 6 cwt. of specimen stone was brought out during the night, to be further increased by this afternoon’s shift, the total of which, with the deposit of gold made during the day, will be forwarded by wire to-night. Twenty-third of June. —The specimen crushing for this company yesterday turned out very well indeed ; from 2901bs of stone 200ozs of clean, retorted gold was obtained, which when melted by the Bank of New South Wales, was reduced to 1970z5. The general crushing at the Waiotahi Association machine is showing up well for a return of about 3ozs to the ton ; and when this is cleaned up, the directors are expected to pay an immediate dividend of 2s to 3s per scrip. Berkley Castle.—The tributers on the old levels intersected some time ago, the leader which has now become somewhat celebrated, viz., the Harbour View, and from this a large quantity of dirt has been broken out, and a portion of it sent down to Clarkson’s machine, but the roads are in such a fearful condition that it is impossible to send down any more, and the crushing has abruptly ceased for the presentMafter 20 tons had gone through ana the result of this is 19ozs ll6dwts of gold. The stone that is left in the mine paddock is known to be much better than this, therefore it can be safely affirmed that the remaining portion will give a much higher average than that already crushed. XJna.—Up to the last day or so, the general crushing for this company has not been quite up to the mark, but on Wednesday, as telegraphed, a change for the better took place, and again last night some very good stone indeed was broken away from lbe Loyalty leader, while the general stuff going through the mill to-day shows a decided improvement.
Inverness. —Goldsworthy and party, the tributers above the 100 feet level on the old leader, are crashing a very large parcel of stone at the Prince Alfred battery, which was broken from near the surface, and the show it is making is a splendid one. The amalgam taken off the plates in my presence, after a four hour’s run, leads me to expect something near 3 ozs to the ton. Harbor View. —After almost insurmountable difficulties, from the impassable state of the roads, the shareholders have at length been able to make a /start at Partington’s machine, and the show for the last twenty-fbur hours is everything that could be desired. A trial made some two months ago at the Tramway machine gave about ozs to the ton, hut in the stone now crushing more gold has been visible than in any previous lot; therefore, with the shareholders, I naturally expect a yield equal, if not superior, to anything ever got.
Halcyon.—The shareholders of this mine have at last cleared away the heavy landslip which came down a few months ago, and the first lot of stone they have put through the battery, which is held in conjunction with the mine, has been very satisfactory, 45 tons being reduced with a yield of 20 ozs retorted gold. This average will pay them handsomely, as the reef (old Colleen Bawn) is upwards of three feet thick, and is taken out by contractors at 3s 6d per ton, and reduced by their own mill, which is worked by water.
