Appointments. —A gazette issued on Thursday contains the following appointments :—Mr William Best to be Official Auditor for Wellington under the Mining Company’s Limited Liability Act, 1865 ; Mr C. H. Borlase to be a coroner within the colony; Mr C. G. Knight to be accountant and chief clerk in the Government Annuities Office ; Mr Little, of Marton, Mr W. H. Handley, of Nukumaru, Mr G. M. Snelson, of Palmersson North, Mr S. Prosser, of Porirua Ferry, Mr J. H. Boss, of Taita, and Mr J. M. K. M'Donald, of Wan* gaehu, to be postmasters. Oub Law Oofets. —Judge Cope of Melbourne, seems determined, if possible, to check the cacoethes loquendi which prevails to such a great extent in our law courts. His Honor very naturally cannot see the necessity for counsel inflicting two or more long speeches on the Court when one would, answer every purpose, except that of hopelessly confusing the judge. He has therefore announced his intention of allowing counsel for the plaintiff’s the right to sum up the evidence in reply, if their remarks at the opening of the case be of reasonable length and strictly to the point. Counsel for the defence, too, if they make their statements of the defence as concise as possible, will be allowed to say a few words at the conclusion of the evidence. If some such rule were laid down and strictly adhered to the public business would be transacted in one half the time it has hitherto occupied.
