THE THAMES.
(Correspondent Southern Cross, July 22.) Caledonian have lodged 2,100 oz of gold. More specimens were taken from the Nonpareil last night. The Multum in Parvo crushing at Weston’s is looking very well. A great scarcity of coal still exists. The Criterion machine has had to stop crushing, and also the Prince Alfred for a time. The City of London crashing at the Prince Alfred commenced last night, and despite numerous stoppages has already made a good plate show. There is nothing special to report regarding the Caledonian. Shares are rising again without any assignable cause, so far as the mine is concerned. The total amount of melted gold in the Bank from this crushing is 33620 z. About 40C0oz of gold is expected for the fortnight. The share market is fluctuating. Caledonian shares opened at £lls, closed £126 ; Thames, closed £26 ; Tookey, £25 ; Nonpareil sold £4 10s. Caledonian.—2loo ounces, obtained partly from general stuff and partly from specimens, was lodged to-day at the Bank of New Zealand, and fetched the gold in hand up to 3414 ounces. This was melted, and reduced to 3362 ounces. There is more to come in from the batteries ; the fortnight’s yield is therefore likely to be 4000 ounces, or over. [Correspondent F.Z. Herald, July 22.] The Red, White, and Blue crushing is looking well for over an ounce to the ton. The Alburnia will have a fine yield to-morrow, considering the quantity put through. Tookey (Wood’s tribute) is showing up for another magnificent yield. The Una has taken out some more good stone to-day. In the share market there is nothing doing, but it is firmer in tone. Caledonian are quoted from £125 to £127 10s ; Thames, buyers at £23 10s, ex div.; Tookey, none in market; Nonpariel, 90s to 92s 6d. These prices are not to be depended upon. One broker quotes one price, and another quotes a different oue. The Moantairi expect about 300 ozs. to-morrow. Caledonian.—l have not been able to go below to-day, in consequence of the rope having to be adjusted, so as to work down to the new low level, and also to work to the old place in the No. 2 shaft, which cannot be done without some alterations, as the one shaft is so much below the other. The manager reports that there is no change whatever in the mine, the lode presenting nothing unusual to what has been the rule for a fortnight past. A quantity of gold has been lodged to-day, which has brought up the deposit to 84140 z 14dwt retorted, and, when melted, to 33620zs 7dwts, which will be augmented to-mor-row by a further small quantity, which, will give about the yield predicted in yesterday’s issue.
