Russian Assurance.—The German "St Petersburg Grazette" observes that Russia.has " gained two victories over England"—a diplomatic one in the Black Sea question, and a financial one in the matter of the New Russian loan. "It is known," says the " Gazette," " that the London Stock Exchange suddenly felt certain patriotic scruples, and thought it a most provoking act on the part of Russia to come to the English market in the same month in which she had of her own will freed herself from the treaty of 1856, and before the other Powers had given their consent to an alteration of the treaty. Yet the sum Russia asked for has been subscribed twice over in London all the same, and this success is the more remarkable that the price of the new Russian Five per Cent. Loan is much higher than any of those which were issued in 1867 and 1868." A New Pleasure.—Polish Jews conforming to the edict relating to modern costume are now permitted to wear their beards.
The Naseby Telegraph.—The opening of telegraphic communication with Naseby, Otago,- is reported by the local paper to have been attended with great success, inasmuch as the work is already too much for one operator.
