WANGANUI, July 18. The Wangaehu Hotel was totally destroyed by fire on Sunday night. A man, named Peter Finn, was burnt to death. The building was insured in the New Zealand for £4OO ; stock and furniture in the Victoria for £250. A terrific gale blowing. AUCKLAND, July 11. In the Police Court, at Grahamstown, several informations were laid against Arthur G. Power for forgery. Two cases were gone into, one for forging the name of Jane Power to a transfer of five shares in the Golden Calf to Buckland, and another for forging the same name to a transfer of ten shares in the Golden Calf. The evidence went against accused, and he-was remanded till Thursday. Business is dull. Caledonians sold at £lO5 to £ll2 ; Thames, £22 to £23. Alburnias and North Devons enquired for. July 19. The weather is still very boisterous ; the Manukau bar is dangerous. The St Kilda is detained. Yesterday, Gilbert Seymour Hall was found dead at the bottom of Tookey's shaft. He is supposed to have fallen down during Saturday night. Deceased was found with his head under his body. He was a native of Prescott and belonged to a wealthy family. Two well known brokers have disappeared suddenly, leaving considerable liabilities. A return ball will be given by the citizens to the Governor on Thursday. The Nevada with large mails and forty-three passengers, sailed on the 14th. The Wild Duck has cleared for London, she sails on Thursday with 20,000 ounces of gold, ten passengers, and 1,400 tons cargo.

During the past week 10,644 ounces have been received from the mines.

Little Dick and Hamlet are fancied for the Metropolitan and the Cup. The Game Cock, from America, brings 8500 cases of kerosene, the greater portion of which was sold to arrive, and the balance is being negotiated for. A small parcel of Adelaide wheat was sold at 7s 4d; New Zealand oats, 3s 2£d to 3s 5d ; maize, 3s 9d to 3s lOd, with fair enquiry ; candles, 10£d. Business is still unsatisfactory. At

auction to-day, a small quantity Adelaide wheat has been quitted at 7s 4d. The uncertainty of the tariff prevents business, except in the way of speculation. July 12. Mr Gilbert Elliott, late Speaker of the Queensland Assembly, is dead. A gentleman jumped overboard from the Collaroy on her trip to the Hunter, when near Sydney Heads on the 3rd, and disappeared. It is surmised that he was struck by the paddle wheels and killed. No clue has been obtained to his identity.

Captain Macfarland, an old trader to the Navigator Islands, has been found dead at Rolfe's wharf, Sydney. He is supposed to have died from apoplexy.

The collier Helen, from Newcastle for Geelong, is missing, and is supposed to have foundered at sea. The Treasurer of the South Australian Government is expected to arrive shortly at Sydney to make arrangements for supplies being forwarded to the Northern Territory, for the parties engaged in tending the telegraph line to Port Darwin.

Shipping.—Arrived, July 12, Lindisfern, from Mauritius with 10,482 packages sugar; Golden Fleece, from London in 90 days, with general cargo ; May Queen, from Table Bay, June 1, has brought 15,000 boxes raisins and 45 tons sugar.

Adelaide, July 9.

The "Advertiser" has given up Hansard because it necessitated the retirement of Barrow, proprietor, who is a member of the Legislature. The " .Register" has undertaken it. Pearson, a draper's assistant has poisoned himself in consequence of his employer slandering him. He left a written statement to that effect.

The Government selected the Bengal, a sailing vessel to proceed to the Northern territory. A steamer will probably follow.

The Mercantile Marine balance-sheet shows a profit of £14,000. Hobart Town, July 11. The Government have discovered that they have no power to alienate the land

belonging to the military barracks without the consent of the British Government.

Agricultural statistics show a surplus of 328,000 bushels of wheat. Potatoes are dull at £-2 per ton.
