Loss of Exhibits.—The whole of the Queensland exhibits for London have been lost in the wreck of the Queen of the Thames. Tookey's Shakes are quoted in the " Melbourne Argus" at £35 half cash. Dkowned in the Waitaki. —A man named Hugh M'Donald was drowned whilst attempting to cross the Waitaki on horseback, at Kauro, on the 18th ult. The deceased, we learn, crossed the river on the 16th ult., the horse which carried him swimming across. On the 18th, as he wanted to go from the Canterbury to the Otago side, he attempted to cross again, although his mate did all he could to dissuade him from doing so, it being dark at the time when he started to cross. Shortly after he had got into the main stream, his mate, who was on the bank, heard him say, " The mare is drowning with me," and, almost immediately after, " I'm sinking myself." It being dark at the time, his mate could not see what had occurred. Next morning the mare was found drowned, but no trace of M'Donald could be got, though a party of men with a boat searched all along the river for a distance of six miles. The body has not yet been recovered.

Roughing- It. —His Honor Judge Ward returned to Hokitika on June 28, having during his absence held courts at Greymouth, Charleston, and Westport. At Charleston, says the local paper, on his Honor taking his seat, he expressed his regret that he was not clothed in the usual costume of a judge. The omission, he said, was occasioned by the fact of his having ridden overland from the Grey, which precluded his bringing any luggage with him. His Honor remarked that had he waited at Greymouth to get round by the steam vessel, he should have been obliged to have ordered the adjournment of the Charleston Court to Friday, and, in the same way, the Courts at Westport, Greymoutb, Hokitika and Timaru.
