• BLENHEIM, July 3. Sutherland crushing report—7o tons of stone, estimated 30 tons of quartz, from the new tunnel, yielded 2dwts of retorted gold. 10 tons of quartz from a new reef in the middle of the claim, gave 2dwts of gold. The drive along the reef, 70 feet, changed its appearance, and is becoming more like old tunnel stone. CHRISTCHURCH, July 4. A Chess match by telegraph between the Christchurch and Dunedin Chess Clubs was won last night by ChriatcLurch. June 5. Mr Hewlings, of Timaru, has been appointed Chief Surveyor, in room of the late Cyrus Davie. The Provincial Council meets on 14th July. TIMARU, June 30. A large meeting was held last night, the Mayor presiding. Resolutions were passed unanimously in favor of a memorial to the Government showing that the £7,000 voted for harbor improvements is still lying unexpended in the hands of the Boardf of Works; also, asking the Government to instruct the
Marine Engineer to report on the practicability of carrying out the works for the roadstead. A resolution in favor of petitioning the Assembly to pass an amended act to restrict the spending of the sum apportioned under the act of 1867 to harbor works only, and in the event of the Board failiug to carry out the work within six months, the Government to have power to appoint Commissioners was also agreed. ' DUNEDIN, July 4. The Escort brought down 11,000 ozs. M'Glashan's Hour mill at the Water of Leith was totally destroyed by fire this morning. The origin of the fire is mysterious. It began in a building unoccupied. The mill is insured for £ISOO in the In the amended Estimates there is a reduction of £7OOO annually. In future years the Superintendent's salary is reduced to £BOO. • The Council refused to vote salaries for an increase of the Executive. June 5. The Dunedin University was opened with great eclat Major Richardson delivered the inaugural address, which occupied two hours in the delivery. There was a large and fashionable attendance. Thirty students have already been elected.
