Eat MiGEATION. —An Adelaide telegram says :—The rats coming over from Queensland are becoming a serious nuisance in the far north. At one house 600 of the vermin were killed in one night. Eatanswill. —Arrowtown bids fair to become the Eatanswill of Otago. The two papers recently started there —the " Advocate" and the " Observer" —devote a large portion of their space to abusing each other, and the number of bad puns made by each on the name of the other is something appalling. An Insane Phenomenon.—The Bolton " Chronicle" records an extraordinary presentation. Two attendants on the lunatics in the Bolton workhouse being about to leave that establishment, the patients presented them respectively with a writing desk and a Bible. The report states that 150 insane persons were present on the occasion. Stbange Custom.—The foundation of a local custom that maj endure long enougb to be an "old custom" is thus alluded to by the " Ballaratt Caurier" .—Mr Bath, according to annual custom, on Monday re-asserted his occupancy of the thoroughfare known as Bath street, by having a rope drawn across from one side of the street to the other. The usual attendant was present to claim a tollage of 6d from every vehicle which passed through.
